Internet & Technology Addiction

How compulsive technology use develops, and what effective treatment involves.

Internet and technology addiction is a pattern of compulsive engagement with digital devices, apps, or online activity that continues despite negative effects on mood, relationships, work, or health. It is not simply spending a lot of time online — the distinguishing feature is loss of control.

What Is Internet and Technology Addiction?

This belongs to a group of conditions known as behavioural or process addictions, where the compulsion centres on an activity rather than a substance. “Gaming disorder” is formally recognised by the WHO in the ICD-11; broader internet addiction is still an evolving diagnostic picture, though the difficulty is real regardless of label.

Why It’s Easy to Underestimate

Digital devices are woven into work and daily logistics, so heavy use rarely looks unusual — constant availability is often rewarded rather than questioned. Costs accumulate quietly: eroded sleep, frayed attention, relationships receiving less presence than before.

Signs of Problematic Use

Compulsive checking, inability to disconnect, using screens to avoid difficult feelings, sleep disruption, and displacement of work or relationships. What matters is the pattern — several signs together, persisting over time, resisting attempts to change.

How Treatment Works

Effective treatment doesn’t centre on the device — it explores what the behaviour is doing for the person (soothing anxiety, avoiding difficult feelings) through one-to-one psychological therapy, rebuilding a sustainable relationship with technology rather than pursuing total abstinence.

How is this different from just using technology a lot?

The distinction is control and consequences — whether use continues despite clear costs, not hours spent.

Do I have to give up technology completely to get better?

Usually not. Treatment aims at a sustainable relationship with devices and resolving the underlying drivers.
