Group vs. Individual Therapy

A balanced guide to two proven models, and why Holina Executive is built around one-to-one care.

Group therapy and individual therapy are two established formats for delivering psychological treatment. In group therapy, a clinician works with several clients together; in individual therapy, a single client works privately with one clinician. Both are evidence-based and widely used.

What’s the Difference Between Group and Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy is a private, one-to-one relationship moving at that person’s pace. Group therapy draws on peer interaction and shared reflection. Neither is inherently superior — many programmes deliberately combine them, and the right choice depends on what a person needs and their circumstances outside the room.

What Group Therapy Offers

Peer connection that eases shame and isolation, shared learning from others’ experiences, practising social skills, mutual accountability, and cost efficiency. For someone comfortable being open in front of others, group therapy can be genuinely transformative.

What Individual Therapy Offers

Complete privacy, a fully personalised plan shaped around one person’s history and goals, control over pace, and depth on sensitive material a person may never raise in front of others. For those needing discretion or with complex personal material, this is often the better fit.

Why Holina Executive Is Built Around the One-to-One Model

For executives, founders, and public figures, sitting in a group alongside strangers carries a real risk of recognition and exposure that could have serious professional consequences — a risk that can stop someone from seeking help at all. The one-to-one model removes it. This is a deliberate design choice for our specific audience, not a judgement on group therapy’s value elsewhere.

Is individual therapy better than group therapy?

Not as a general rule — both are evidence-based. Holina Executive offers only individual care because confidentiality is the overriding requirement for our clients.

Why does Holina Executive not offer group therapy?

A group setting introduces a risk of recognition that our clients cannot reasonably accept, so we’ve built our programme entirely around one-to-one care.
