About The Sober Intervention

A structured path
through denial to recovery

How to help families break through denial, motivate a loved one to accept support, and begin the journey into recovery.

HOLINA Global, in collaboration with Sober-Services.com and Sober-Academy.com, is proud to present Ian Young's signature two-day training programme: The Sober Intervention.

For the first time in Cyprus, internationally recognised interventionist and recovery specialist Ian Young will deliver this intensive, in-person training at HOLINA Executive's private beachfront location near Larnaca.

Created specifically for professionals working with addiction, behavioural challenges and families in crisis, the programme provides a structured and compassionate approach to one of the most difficult questions a family can face:

How do we help someone who does not believe—or will not accept—that they need help?

Ian Young

Interventionist & Recovery Specialist · Founder, Sober-Services.com

Ian Young has supported families living with active addiction since 2003 and has been in personal recovery since March 2001.

Recognised as one of the first professional interventionists operating outside North America, Ian has played a significant role in developing the specialist pre-treatment sector across Europe and beyond. Through his private practice, Sober-Services.com, he has helped advance professional interventions, sober companionship, sober transportation and recovery coaching throughout Europe, South Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The Sober Intervention was developed from Ian's extensive experience of working directly with European families in crisis. It reflects his understanding that intervention must be both structured and culturally responsive: the principles may be universal, but their delivery must respect the family, its relationships and its cultural context.

About Sober-Academy

Founded in 2015, Sober-Academy.com has delivered professional trainings in England, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, Russia, Israel and Thailand. Its programmes have included:

  • Accredited Sober Intervention Training
  • Accredited Recovery Coaching Training
  • Sober Transporter Training
  • Development of the Sober Practitioner programme

Sober Intervention training was historically accredited. During the global pandemic, Ian chose not to move the programme online, believing that the integrity, energy and experiential value of the training were best preserved through in-person delivery. As a result, the previous accreditation was allowed to lapse.

Supporting Professional Standards Across Europe

In 2017, Ian joined six practitioners representing seven European countries—the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden—to establish EARS: the European Association of Recovery Specialists.

Today, EARS supports sober companions, recovery specialists and interventionists across Europe and beyond. It promotes ethical practice, professional development and collaboration while giving members access to resources including insurance, accreditation pathways, professional networking and assignment-sharing opportunities.

The Framework

From First Call
to Lasting Recovery

The Method

What The Sober Intervention Addresses

The Sober Intervention was developed to help create the motivation for an individual to seek professional support for addiction or other challenging behaviours.

The approach can be applied to concerns including:

  • 01
    Alcohol and substance misuse
  • 02
    Gambling and gaming
  • 03
    Sex and relationship-related compulsive behaviours
  • 04
    Compulsive eating
  • 05
    Other addictive or self-defeating behaviours
  • 06
Certain emotional, behavioural and mental health challenges

At the heart of the training are the Seven Stages of The Sober Intervention—a clear, process-driven framework designed to guide practitioners from the family's initial request for help through to the most challenging conversations and, ultimately, towards treatment and recovery.

The Outcomes

What You Will Learn

The programme combines intervention methodology, family-systems awareness, crisis navigation and practical tools that professionals can apply in real-world situations. Participants will develop a stronger understanding of how to:

  • 01
Engage and prepare families for the intervention process
  • 02
Recognise and address denial within the family system
  • 03
Create the conditions that can motivate someone to accept help
  • 04
Navigate emotionally charged and high-pressure conversations
  • 05
Maintain structure, compassion and professional boundaries
  • 06
Adapt the intervention process to different families and cultural settings
  • 07
Guide families towards appropriate professional treatment
  • 08
Act with greater clarity and confidence during moments of crisis
